How much time does social media marketing take out of your work day?
It’s no surprise that social media takes up a larger part of a marketer’s day than it did even a year ago. The addition of social networks your company needs to have a presence on and keep updated is growing out of control, leaving many marketers drowning in the increased time and investment required.
However, the massive amount of time marketers are dedicating to social media these days is no indication that they are doing it right. In fact, I would bet that in most cases the more time a marketer spends on social media, the less likely they are to actually have a strategy at all. Many marketers don’t know how to tackle the mountain that is social media and wind up wasting a lot of time haphazardly updating and monitoring their social presence.
A winning social media strategy is all about working smarter, not harder. Unless you are an enterprise level company, all you need to truly rock your social media is 30 minutes a day. With automation tools like Pardot to take care of many of the time-consuming and repetitive tasks, all that you need is a well defined daily plan and some self discipline.
We’ve put together the following infographic to help you determine which tasks are most important, and how much time you should ideally be dedicating to each of your social channels. Your strategy likely will (and should!) differ slightly from the infographic below, but the important thing is to identify your key channels, plan for a set number of tasks, and allot yourself a set period of time and stick to it! Furthermore, don’t forget to measure the success of your efforts, and focus your resources on the initiatives that are actually bringing in results.
Let’s take a look at what an effective approach might look like:

Great summary on how to approach social media for your business. You’re right, with so many sites today, it can be quite overwhelming! This provides a very doable roadmap for folks to see how they can tackle social media successfully for themselves.
Thank you so much for the kind words! We’re thrilled you found it handy!
An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this onto a co-worker who was conducting a little
homework on this. And he actually bought me breakfast because I found it for him.
.. lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks
for spending time to discuss this topic here on your
site.
I love the graphic. It’s really easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the social networks out there, with more seeming to appear and become popular every month.
30 minutes a day is a great start. If you are monitoring. But engaging as well?
Engagement is certainly the slippery slope of social. The level of engagement a brand puts in would differ by industry, strategy, etc. The point the infographic is making is that no matter what your strategy, allocating a set amount of time to focus on engaging is the key. Whether that be 10 minutes or and hour. When you start responding without a plan, social can start taking over your day.
Hi Matt,.
On social media my focus has primarily been twitter, though am trying to branch out to facebook.
One thing I have found out to work is focusing on few social network because spreading your tentacles to many could eat up your time that could have been spent doing other important things.
I love the way you crafted the infographic in such a simple way while still passing out the key message about trying to engage and asking questions. This has been key to getting many influencers to follow me on twitter.
Just sharing there content is not enough, you ll need to ask key question that gets them thinking that way you start up useful conversation that forces them to take a look at your profile.
