6 Skills of Successful Marketers

6 Skills of Successful Marketers

Marketing is always changing. Remember the door-to-door salesmen that used to stop by your house once a week when you were a kid? There’s a reason that we don’t see that as often anymore, and it’s because we’ve found quicker and more effective ways to target our consumers. While marketing used to be about toting your product from one door to another, it now revolves around the use of technology to save time, energy, and money.

As the roles of marketers have changed, so have their required skill sets. You don’t need a great phone voice as much as you need the flexibility to deal with changing technologies. So what traits do today’s b2b marketers need to be successful? Check out the list below to find out:

1. Know how to use the tools at your disposal.

Today’s marketing industry is all about technology. While we used to rely on cold calls and direct mail, we now have email marketing platforms, social media, and marketing automation systems that can help us accomplish the same things, but more efficiently. That’s why it’s so important for marketers to be tech-savvy in an industry where being business-savvy is only half the battle. If you can’t use the tools at your disposal, you’re missing the opportunity to cut costs, save time, and increase efficiency.

2. Have a global perspective.

As we continue to advance through the digital age, it’s becoming easier and easier for companies to consider going global. The internet is breaking barriers that twenty years ago we had never dreamed of breaking. Even if your company isn’t global, a smart marketer understands the potential that lies outside the comfort zone of their current market. Just keep in mind that with the internet, your site and your content are available to everyone, everywhere.

3. Fine-tune your writing skills.

We may be living in the digital age, but it’s still just as important to be able to write as it was twenty years ago. Think about it. In the day-to-day life of a marketer, how much time is spent crafting press releases, writing blog posts, drafting emails, editing articles, and fitting important marketing messages into 140 characters? That’s right, a lot.

4. Be flexible.

You can be the smartest marketer in the world, but if you can’t adapt when the industry changes around you, you may not be as smart as you thought. We’ve seen companies forced to pivot time and time again when their strategies didn’t pan out for them. Some recovered, others didn’t. The ones that did recover were the ones who were able to take their roadmap, turn it upside down, and change direction.

5. Know how to read numbers.

Marketing metrics have gotten a lot more popular over the past few years. It’s important that marketers know how to run reports on their campaigns and draw conclusions from their data. If you can’t understand the numbers, it’s that much harder to evaluate the effectiveness of your campaigns and adjust your strategies in the future.

6. Understand how SEO, content marketing, and social media contribute to your strategy.

These are three of the biggest facets of today’s marketing industry. SEO and social media bring prospects to your site, and content marketing gives them something to look forward to once they get there. If you don’t have a solid foundation in each of these three areas, your marketing strategies could suffer.

Now, this isn’t to say that someone who has all of these traits is going to be the world’s best marketer. But marketers who do take the time to cultivate these skills will experience more success in the long term. Are there any other traits that you think marketers should possess?
